Deck Staining & Waterproofing
Deck staining covers cleaning, sanding, staining, and sealing wood decks across DFW. We prep the surface, apply a stain that resists UV and standing water, and seal the deck so it holds up to Texas sun and summer storms.
What It Covers
Wood deck boards, railings, stairs, posts, and deck furniture pads. Cedar, pressure-treated pine, and redwood decks.

How We Prepare
Prep is where the hours go and where the finish lasts. Here is the sequence for deck staining & waterproofing.
- 01Pressure wash the deck to remove dirt, mildew, and gray wood fibers
- 02Apply a wood cleaner or stripper if the deck has an old stain or sealer
- 03Allow the wood to dry fully — typically 48 to 72 hours
- 04Sand deck boards, railings, and stairs to remove splinters and smooth the surface
- 05Inspect for loose boards, nails, or screws and secure them
- 06Mask adjacent siding, landscaping, and concrete
- 07Apply stain to vertical surfaces first — railings and posts
- 08Apply stain to horizontal surfaces — deck boards and stairs
- 09Back-brush to work stain into the wood and avoid pooling
What Drives The Price
Every estimate is different. These are the factors that move the number on a deck staining & waterproofing project.
Factor
---
Square footage of deck surface
Deck height and number of levels
Wood type — cedar, pressure-treated, or redwood
Condition of the wood — weathered decks need more prep
Whether old stain needs to be stripped
Stain type — transparent, semi-transparent, or solid
Railing linear footage and detail level
Coat count
No dollar figures here — every project is different. Call for a real number.
On DFW Properties
Texas sun and summer storms degrade deck finishes fast — horizontal surfaces take the brunt of UV and standing water after heavy rains.
DFW's hot, humid summers create ideal conditions for mildew growth on shaded deck areas and between boards.
Cedar and pressure-treated pine are common deck materials across the metroplex, and both require regular maintenance to prevent splitting and graying.
How To Compare Estimates
Not all estimates cover the same work. Here is what to check when comparing bids for deck staining & waterproofing.
Whether cleaning and stripping are included
What stain product and type is used
Coat count on horizontal vs vertical surfaces
Whether the deck is allowed to dry before staining
How railings and posts are protected
Whether back-brushing is included
What is excluded
Expected lifespan of the finish
Common Questions
Every 2 to 3 years for transparent and semi-transparent stains, and 3 to 5 years for solid stains. Horizontal surfaces that catch sun and standing water need re-staining sooner than vertical railings.
Reviews
"Very impressed with this company. It is a family. They all play a role. They came to our house to make a bid. I had a price that evening. Once we decided on Cast Castro, we set a date (literally 2 days later!). They arrived on time. They worked as a team, were very professional and meticulous, kept the house as clean as possible, and finished when promised."

"Happy with the professional work Cast Castro did for our exterior paint job and for the right price. They replaced rotted wood, meticulously prepped the house and painted samples on parts of the house to get an idea of the finished work. Cast Castro is thorough in their process."
